Besides being one of the most popular and eagerly-anticipated game releases, Killzone2 had, quite simply, the most astounding and realistic graphics of any combat game to date. But we needed a way to prove it to skeptical gamers.
So we decided to show off the game in a dramatic and convincing way: by creating the entire spot in the game engine, taking the viewer through one actual second of gameplay footage, slowed down.
Then we created another industry first. We let gamers actually play the TV spot. Over 400,000 PlayStation Network users were able to download a 4D version of the commercial where they could control the action, peel back layers, hear director’s commentary and analyze every millisecond.
The result was even more impressive: Killzone2 sold its first million copies faster than any game in PlayStation history.
